The uncommonly wet weather we’ve seen on the Front Range this year has resulted in lush, green mountains that one normally associates with the Pacific Northwest.
It also seems to have resulted in an abundance of bear food, as we’ve seen bears on our property 5 times since late April.
Our friends Ted & Caroline came to visit this last weekend, and when they went up to their car on Saturday morning, were suprised to see bear prints all over their truck. I guess they had left some food in the truck the night before.
Yesterday afternoon, we saw a small black bear in our backyard. I managed to get a couple shots of him, here’s one:

404 on the pics in your LJ, due to relative links I think. What's the original URL of your weblog again?

the girls know to keep their distance. bears are an uncommon enough site that they still get a little freaked out by them. we can always tell when a bear has been sighted because kaya's bark will take on a very distinctive tone of alarm. once we hear that bark, we'll come out and call her up on the deck.
most bears i wouldn't worry about -- black bears tend to be pretty timid. the only ones i worry about are the mama bears, which we've seen this year with 2 cubs: a blonde and a brown. apparently the cubs only have a range of a mile so they must live pretty close. the one time we saw them kaya's barking treed the cubs. mama bear patiently waited for kaya to move on and the cubs scampered back down and headed south with mama bear.
all the moisture means lots more to eat all around. we've heard the mountain lions and seen plenty of elk this summer too.
